Palatal Expander Use

IMG_1681The palatal expander is used to “expand” (or widen) your upper jaw. Each time an adjustment is made, the expander puts gentle pressure on your upper molars.  Step-by-step instructions and instructional animation on how to adjust your expander are provided below.  Once desired expansion is reached, you will continue to wear your expander for several months to solidify the expansion and prevent regression.

Step 1

In a well-lit area tip the patient’s head back.

Step 2

Place the key in the hole until it is firmly in place.

Step 3

Pushing the key towards the back of the mouth, you will notice the fender will rotate and the new hole will appear. The rotation stops when the key meets the back of the expander.

Step 4

By pushing back and down towards the tongue, remove the key. The next hole for insertion of the key should now be visible.

“Both Robinson and Ries are extremely knowledgeable and meticulous when it comes to orthodontics. The thing that sets them apart, though, is that they’re also personable and genuinely care about all of their patients. The whole staff is so kind and the environment is great.   I’d recommend them to anyone and everyone who’s considering orthodontics for their kids or themselves– I’m in college and am SO glad I endured the braces. Trust me, just go for it!:) ”
